Contractor License Requirements in California

California requires a contractor license for any project over 500 dollars (including labor and materials). The CSLB issues licenses in 44 classifications. Applicants must pass two exams, show 4 years of journeyman-level experience, and post a 25,000 dollar surety bond.

Bond Requirements

25,000 dollar contractor surety bond required. Bond amount increases to 100,000 or 125,000 dollars if past disciplinary actions. Bond of Qualifying Individual (12,500 dollars) also required.

Insurance Requirements

Workers compensation required if you have employees. Exemption available for sole owners with no employees. General liability insurance recommended but not required by CSLB.

Renewal

Every 2 years. Renewal fee is 450 dollars. No continuing education required for most classifications. Active license required to bid, contract, or perform work.

Penalties for Unlicensed Work

Operating without a license: misdemeanor, up to 6 months in jail, fine up to 5,000 dollars. First offense for contracting without a license in excess of 500 dollars: fine and/or jail. Advertising without a license: 15,000 dollar fine per occurrence.
